Balcony in Over the Rhine, Ohio 2008, Year 3
Semester at the Centre for Community Engagement in Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio from the Miami University School of Architecture
The third year of my architecture degree saw me travel away from my regular campus. I wanted an adventure, and to see a different way of life. During the autumn of 2008, I lived in Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio. My university has a campus there for students to engage with the local community and use architecture as a way to help others. Over the Rhine is a poor community but has a strong identity, and we spent the semester learning about urban design, ghettos and social issues. As a group, all nine students who were living in Over the Rhine from my university were given the opportunity to build a balcony for two nuns living nearby. Their three-story home had a door opening onto nothing on the second floor, and they hoped to create not only a safe balcony but to incorporate sun shading for their first floor kitchen. All of us were involved in designing and detailing this structure, and we took it to the city for planning permission.
